Putting Tips The Professionals Use
One thing about a
professional golfer's putting is it remains consistent. You've
probably noticed this if you regularly watch tournaments on
television or if you have attended one. To confidently step up
to the ball like they do is an ability most golfers would love
to have. Putting is one of the most difficult parts of the game
of golf to master, so don't get discouraged. It took hour after
hour of practice for the pros to make it look so effortless.
Well, with some steady practice and some very good tips, you
will be able to putt just like a pro.
A systematic approach to putting is the key to a
professional golfers putting game. They go thru the same steps
each and every time they get ready to putt the ball. This
routine wasn't developed overnight, either. It took years for
them to hone this skill. Though everyone of them has a
different approach to putting, there are a lot of common
techniques that they follow that is the foundation to their
excellent putting skills.
One common technique
they all demonstrate is that they always focus their eyes
directly over the ball. Try this technique if your putts,
instead of going straight, seem to go left or right more
frequently than they should. Position an extra ball directly
ahead of the ball you mean to putt. Hold another ball in your
hand as you get in your putting stance. Once settled, bring the
ball in your hand up to eye level and release it. Your putting
stance is correct if the ball you drop hits the ball in front
of the ball you intend to putt. If it didn't hit that ball, you
are going to have to adjust your stance until it
does.
Another technique is to
keep tension to a minimal. Tension will have adverse affects on
your putting. If your grip is too tight on the putter, you
likely have a lot of tension in your shoulders, arms, and
hands. This will unquestionably cause you to have an erratic
stroke. Let the putter lie in the palm of your hands, not the
fingers. Take a few deep breaths and relax your whole body.
Many golfers tense up when they are about to putt, so staying
relaxed is very important in producing a smooth putting
stroke.
Inspecting the grass
before you putt is another good idea, and a habit you need to
develop. The direction of the grass in reference to your ball
will affect the outcome of your putt. If the blades are facing
your ball, then the ball will move slower. If they are facing
away, the ball will roll faster. A slow putt is generally
preferred because you can strike it harder and have more
control over the ball.
A good technique to
assist you with a smooth, fluid putting stroke is to think
about a pendulum on one of those grandfather clocks. The
pendulum swings back and forth with the same rhythmic stroke
every time. Also, it doesn't matter about the distance of the
putt. You need to keep the same rhythm and tempo on every putt.
Decelerating the putter head prior to contact will ensure that
your putt will always end up short of the hole. If you apply
these few tips to your game, you'll find yourself putting like
a pro in no time.
